  3. Math opens doors for students. When they are in high school it is very rare to find a student who knows what they want to do after they graduate. I tell them that if they take the required courses to enter a Cal State University (A-G), they are in control of their lives and can make decisions about their future. It is there decision to attend community college or a 4-year institution. Algebra is for all students. It helps them become a clearer thinker and work on problem solving, which everyone needs when they enter the job market.

  4. I tell students about the use of logic in life. Unfortunately many concepts like quadratic equations and rational functions will not be used in the daily life of many students unless they pick a math oriented career. I try to point out simplistic examples of each topic that each student can relate to. For example when studying parabolas I showed a picture of a dolphin jumping - which is the shape of a parabola.

If math teachers can find any realistic examples of the mathematical concept they are teaching applied to real life students instantly become more engaged.
